How do you lock new VHS TAPES?
You can lock new VHS tapes by removing the tab located at the side of the tape. This is a plastic tab that will be pressed into the tape and then broken off and removed.
Is DVD better than vhs?
DVDs are a digital medium, whereas VHS tapes are an analogue medium. All digital movie mediums, including DVDs, are compressed in order to fit the huge amount of data (an image for every movie frame) into the available space. This compression can be seen if you look for it - particularly in darker areas, or large blocks of colour with little movement from frame to frame. Technically then, an analogue picture will always be of higher quality than a digital picture, however in the case of VHS the picture quality is largely affected by the tape. If you had a brand new, high quality video cassette being played in a professional grade multi-head video cassette player, the quality should in theory be superior to a DVD. However, over time the tape will degrade and become worn, even stretched. VHS tapes are also susceptible to magnetic interference. DVDs have none of these problems. With analogue pictures, there are varying grades of quality. Think about when TV was analogue: in a strong signal area with good equipment, the picture could be perfect; but in weaker signal areas with poor equipment, the picture becomes snowy and degraded. Digital is not the same - it's either on or off. There or not there. So, whilst a digital picture is inferior in theory to an analogue picture, in most cases a better and more consistent quality is available in digital media. Because of this consistent quality, the image will look much the same on cheap equipment as it does on expensive equipment. The same can certainly not be said of VHS. DVDs also have the advantage of menus, special features, languages, chapters and many other features that VHS tape simply can't provide. And, these days, DVDs are much cheaper and faster to produce than VHS tape.

I think what you are asking is how to re-write over a factory recorded VHS cassette. Correct? If you compare the factory tape to a new blank cassette, you will notice a place (on the left front edge) where the factory tape is missing a small square plastic tab that is still present on the blank. The absence of the tab write-protects the tape and also causes the machine to automatically go to play mode when the cassette is put in. Cover that hole with a piece of tape (doesn't matter if it is clear tape or not) and you're ready to record over whatever was there. To protect your home movies you have on blank VHS tapes, break out the tab after recording. The same applies to audio cassettes. Enjoy.

As we pass through 2009, it's safe to say that video tape is becoming the exception rather than the norm for home recording. VHS was accepted as the universal standard for domestic video formats but DVD recorders and players as well as hard disk recorders are now so common that VHS has almost reached the end of its commercial life. However, to answer the question... VHS was introduced some thirty years ago as a home format. It was relatively compact and relatively low cost (although still expensive by today's standards). The format recorded both brightness and color information together and although it was a breakthrough in terms of affordable recording, the quality was never very good. The poor quality was highlighted whenever a tape was copied: The copy being noticeably poorer quality than the original. S-VHS was an attempt to improve quality. Instead of storing brightness and color information together, the two signals were separated and the picture quality was improved significantly. To fully benefit from the better off-tape quality, a new signal interface, S-video, was introduced. Together, the viewing quality was fairly respectable but still well below broadcast quality. S-VHS was a little too late to make a big impact. Although S-VHS decks could handle standard VHS tapes, they didn't ever catch on in a big way. In order to share tapes, S-VHS was avoided just in case the recipient only had VHS so even S-VHS owners avoided using the better format from time to time. By the time that the consumer began to think of replacing their VHS player with an S-VHS player, DVDs were making an entrance. Those people who were concerned with the best possible quality very quickly moved to DVD as the medium of choice. So, VHS remained the normal format for domestic tape. Manufacturers have largely ceased production of all VHS products and we are able to choose between several digital formats, all of which are far higher quality than VHS ever was. VHS has now passed away with little fuss and despite being such a big part of consumer television, few people are mourning the format today.

I'm having a hard time understanding what it is you're asking. I'm pretty sure you are asking why someone would use a digital video recorder when they could use a vhs. Well the main reason is that vhs's are really crappy and i cant think of any reason why someone would want to use a vcr instead of a dvr.
