Yes. Polygamy was made illegal in the United States in 1862. The reason why is because some utopian societies and religious groups were practicing polygamy and the general public didn't like it so they made a law against it.

In most western cultures, polygamy is not allowed. Those commonly viewed as 'polygamists' in today's western cultures are not legally married to more than one woman, and therefore cannot be charged for the illegal practice of polygamy.

Polygamy is illegal everywhere in the United States, however there are a lot of people secretly practicing this in Utah and the surrounding states.
