There is a lot less resistance with the polygonal rifling. More over, if the polygonal rifling is chrome lined, the walls of the barrel are completely slick and offer less resistance. The projectile, the bullet, goes way faster. IDPA estimation here in the US are 10-30% faster.

What is a polygonal pistol barrel?

Most rifled firearms have a bore that is round, and has spiral grooves (the rifling) cut inside the bore. However, some guns (notably most Glock pistols) use a different system. The cross section of the bore is a polygon, with several flat surfaces. These surfaces twist in a spiral as you pass up the bore. It is claimed that produces a higher velocity than standard rifling, but it cannot be used with unjacketed lead bullets.

Why were rifled guns not considered the best for militaty use?

Although they weren't as accurate, smoothbore "muskets" were easier, faster to reload than a rifled barrel. Less constriction in the barrel without rifling.

Why a hover craft travels much faster than steamer pushing through water?

If you were to parachute in Colorado would you fall slower or faster than in a hotter climate?

In a hotter climate, there are more conventional currents thus meaning that there will be more hot air rising which will effectively slow down the parachute. So in Colorado it will fall faster than in a hotter climate.
