I have two Mutoh Toucan LT printers. These are wide-format printers that use "eco-solvent" ink (it works by dissolving the top layer of the vinyl you print on; when the solvent evaporates and the vinyl hardens, the image is in the material, not on it). It comes in 220ml cartridges which cost between $45 and $65 per cartridge. Let's use the $65 cartridge for our example. That's 30 cents per ml, or $300 per litre. The Mutoh Toucan LT costs $30,000 to buy, or did when they still made it.
If you want to save even more money on ink, try Vutek. Their ink comes in four-litre jugs that cost $320--$80 per litre. You do NOT want a Vutek printer! It costs $150,000, weighs over a ton (IIRC it weighs 2600 lbs...which reminds me, I gotta rent a bigger forklift for when my two Vuteks arrive), requires compressed air and 220v power, uses flammable ink and needs an exhaust system to carry the solvent fumes out of the building. The only reason anyone would ever buy this printer is that it can print a full 165-foot roll of 54-inch-wide vinyl in under two hours. My Mutohs need twelve hours to do the same thing.
