Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespear is one of the most famous stories in literature because the central theme of having a love so strong you are willing to sacrafice everything appeals to the inner romantic of most readers. Most people male or female define the level of success in their lifetime in part by the people who have loved them. Love is a strong feel good emotion that people even without ever before expierencing it strive to have. Romeo and Juliet was one of the original stories to play upon the idea of a connection with another human being so strong that without it life is no longer worth living. As human beings we want that, we want a love worth dying for...and it is this writer opinion that this is the true definition of love, "caring for another human being more than oneself, willing to give up everything and die for the others comfort." So take this strong outlook on the feeling we strive for along with the dramatic and enduring style of the wonderful William Shakespear and voilia you have one of the most famous stories in literature. -Courtney N. Romeo and Juliet is a play, not a sermon. It entertains; it does not teach lessons. It is of course possible to take lessons from the action of the play if you like. One such lesson is "the best laid plans of mice and men gang aft agley" as Robert Burns would later put it.

It was a well-known story which had recently been the subject of a popular poem and thus would likely sell a lot of tickets. Making money was the main purpose of Shakespeare's playwriting at all times, as indeed it is for professional writers at any time. Nowadays, a company proposing to make a film decides what story they are going to tell first, then get someone to write it. In Shakespeare's day the writer chose the story and wrote a play about it and if it was good the theatre company would buy it. Although in Shakespeare's case, he was a partner in the company so he knew it would be bought, but it would make him and his partners more money if it was good and popular, as Romeo and Juliet undeniably was.
