Making money was the main purpose of Shakespeare's playwriting at all times, as indeed it is for professional writers at any time. Nowadays, a company proposing to make a film decides what story they are going to tell first, then get someone to write it. In Shakespeare's day the writer chose the story and wrote a play about it and if it was good the theatre company would buy it. Although in Shakespeare's case, he was a partner in the company so he knew it would be bought, but it would make him and his partners more money if it was good and popular, as Romeo and Juliet undeniably was.
