Absolutely different if not kept in a cage.

Roosters will usually look after a group of hens watching for predators. That's why they are quite aggressive and try to stand between you and the hens. They actually eat very little compared to hens. The rooster will try to mate with each hen once a day. On the contrary, hens pay little attention to their surroundings, concentrated in finding something to eat. Hens scratch the ground to recognize living organisms like earthworms using their eyesight. Hens usually move in group or in pairs. When satisfied, hens will "bathe" in dry earth to get rid of parasites.

Of course, behavior changes when they tend their chicks. During incubation, hens become aggressive too!

Within a flock of chickens one chicken becomes the ALPHA. If a flock is without a male, or the male is timid, a hen will sometimes take on this role. The alpha hen will maintain watch for predators, signal the flock when food is found and call the others home to roost in the evenings.

Chickens = The species name for said egg-laying livestock.

Roosters (known as cocks in other countries) = Male chickens. Larger than hens, with big combs and fancier tailfeathers.

Hens (known as pullets when less than a year old) = Female chickens. They lay eggs, while roosters don't.

Therefore roosters and hens are both chickens, but they are opposite genders. The physical difference between them is mainly for reproduction: roosters seem larger and more visually appealing to try to attract the females attention, then the females would decide which male to mate with.
