The brain stem includes the medulla oblongata, which is a control center for respiratory and many other integrative functions such as cardiovascular, pain sensitivity, and alertness. Any information from the body to the cerebellum and cerebrum must also pass the brain stem. Thus, damage to the brain stem also affects other functions that are not directly related to it as well.

The vital centres of the brain that help us in involutary functions like breathing, beating of the heart are situated just above the neck region, and also, the spinal cord begins at the neck region. Severe damage to the neck, for e.g.: fracture of the neck vertebrae usually causes damage to these areas of the brain and the spinal cord, and are therefore fatal.
