∙ 12y agohe was scared stiff of th guard catching him and the dire consequences of this action. remember the implication that he killed the old man who, starved, spilled wine on him. I don't know if i'd eat that chicken either. it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation and that poor little boy knew it.
