Shmuel
Josef is Shmuel's older brother.
Shmuel is the boy in the striped pyjamas. He is an innocent prisoner at Auschwitz concentration camp. He meets Bruno and they become the best of friends, even though they're two completely different people- Bruno is the son of a Nazi, Shmuel is a Jew.Shmuel is the shy, cute, Polish-Jewish "Boy in the striped pajamas". His father is a watch-maker, his mother a teacher, and he has an older brother named Josef.Shmuel is a Jewish boy who wears "striped pajamas".
Bruno has a better relationship with his mother then his father, Bruno is clearly fairly close as he asks most of his questions to his mother. His father is working at the camp so his mother is one only people he can talk to.
Because, "dolls are for little girls" and now older, she's interested in Nazism.
During a dinner meal with Bruno's family, when Pavel is called to pour wine for Lieutenant Kotler, he fumbles and spills wine on the Lieutenant. What happens next is left to the imagination only being described as "What happened then was both unexpected and extremely unpleasant. Lieutenant Kotler grew very angry with Pavel and no one - not Bruno, not Gretel, not Mother and not even Father stopped in to stop him doing what he did next, even though none of them could watch. Even though it made Bruno cry and Gretel grow pale.", page 148 - 149, Boy in the striped Pyjamas, John Boyne.

I guess that you refer to the film/book "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" ? In that case; In the beginning Bruno thought it was 'a farm'. Later on they explain to him that it is a place for 'all the evils in the world'. Bruno actually never knew that it was a concentration camp, and had no idea what was going on behind the fences... Gretel (Bruno's older sister), on the other hand, did know that it was a concentration camp. 'Brainwashed' by the private tutor and propaganda, she was not against the idea of putting Jews e.o in those camps. Though just like most Germans she did not know about the horrifying situations in the concentration camps.
