I guess that you refer to the film/book "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" ?
In that case;
In the beginning Bruno thought it was 'a farm'. Later on they explain to him that it is a place for 'all the evils in the world'. Bruno actually never knew that it was a concentration camp, and had no idea what was going on behind the fences...
Gretel (Bruno's older sister), on the other hand, did know that it was a concentration camp. 'Brainwashed' by the private tutor and Propaganda, she was not against the idea of putting Jews e.o in those camps. Though just like most Germans she did not know about the horrifying situations in the concentration camps.
In The Boy in Striped Pyjamas Outwith is Bruno's name for Auschwitz.
The Buna camp (Monowitz, Auschwitz III) made various plastics for I.-G. Farben. It was the first concentration camp built by private entreprise.
See: Japanese American internment
I think the first concentration camp was established in Germany, if was used first to hold Germans who disobeyed the Nazi laws, or who said the wrong thing, so it was first used to retrain the Germans, that was before WW2, then they got a new purpose afterwards, as killing chambers.
The first inmates of Nazi concentration camps were Communists, Social Democrats and various political dissidents. (The first inmates of the first concentration camp was women and children of the Boer nation in South Africa - 1898) (There were also Spanish concentration camps in Cuba in the mid 1895s).
She was a little scared. but she kinda knew what it was already.
When Bruno and Gretel look out their window in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, they see Jewish prisoners following orders inside the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Bruno has a better relationship with his mother then his father, Bruno is clearly fairly close as he asks most of his questions to his mother. His father is working at the camp so his mother is one only people he can talk to.

In The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Bruno thought Auschwitz (the concentration camp) was a farm.
Gretel Hoess is a twelve year old girl who enjoys playing with dolls. She is bossy, rude and sarcastic, especially to Bruno. When the family move away (their Father's new job at a concentration camp, probably Auschwitz.) Bruno and Gretel are home tutored by a man name Herr Listz, who teaches them about Antisemitism and Nationalist Propaganda and in response, Gretel becomes increasingly fanatical to the Third Reich and she throws away her dolls and pins up posters of Nazi Propaganda posters. She also begins to flirt with SS Lieutenant Kotler.
Bruno sawed a concentration camp, but did not know it was a concentration camp.
Shmuel goes to Bruno's house with other people from the concentration camp to clean his house. Bruno see's Shmuel cleaning glasses and gives him some food,but a soldier see's him eating and askes Bruno if he gave him the food. Bruno says no to protect himself and the soldier takes Shmuel and gives him a black eye.
