South Pacific which was based on the book Tales of the South Pacific by James Michener opened on Broadway in 1949. It was considered progressive at that time in the way it explored the issue of racial prejudice in the song "You Have To Be Carefully Taught".

South Pacific won the Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama in 1950. In addition, it won the Tony Award for Best Musical, the Tony Award for Best Composer & Lyricist, and the Tony Award for Best Author.
