Subsistence farming is when farmers make only enough crops for themselves and family. They come across different problems to commercial farmers, for instance a rise in the price of fuel would not affect them, they would come across problems like droughts and being sick for a few days etc. Subsistence farming is a small farm usually 1-3 acres of land. These farms have simple tools, (example) hoes, machete and digging stick. The work done in a subsistence farm is done by the farmer and his family and the produce is eaten by the farmer and his family.

Subsistence farming can take many forms. Most of the growing will be done with the seasons. In temperate regions, you will find subsistence farmers growing crops from April to October. A wide variety of crops are needed for the subsistence farmer, some of them can be harvested in May/June, but some crops take all summer to grow to harvest. With proper preservation techniques, it may be possible to grow a large harvest for some crops one year, and then skip a year of production. Potatoes and onions will store well for a long time. The key is to produce a number of different crops that will provide adequate nutrition year-round.
Subsistence farming can be found throughout all of Mexico. However, incidences of this are less common in northern Mexico, due to two factors:Northern Mexico is dominated by the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts, so agriculture is less important than other economic activities; as subsistence farming depends on rain and little to no fertilizers, it cannot be done efficiently on such climate. Most agriculture in northern Mexico follows the agribusiness economic model, so most farms are owned or leased to agribusiness corporations and are dedicated to "cash crops", such as cotton, citric fruits and wheat.
I believe that most of the farming was done on the plateau.
