AM frequencies have long wavelengths, and the ground wave is what is detected. This just decays linearly with distance.

FM frequencies are generally about 100 MHz +/- and have small ground waves, but are too high a frequency to be reflected by the ionosphere. They are essentially line-of-sight signals, though occasionally you'll get a little fringing signal.

How is diffraction used for radio communications?

A radio programme receiver does not need to be directly in view of the transmitter to receive programme signals. For low frequency radio waves diffraction can allow them to be received behind hills, although repeater stations are often used to improve the quality of the signals.

What are the effects of hills on analog signals?

UHF? VHF? AM? HAM bands, CB bands, Trunkers...... I need more info. In general, Analog signals are best at night. This is because the Ionosphere get's extremely charged with protons, thus reflects Analog signals better. Hills can definitely make an impact on signals, and the make-up of the hill is more important than the size. A signal will be able to travel through graphite easier than lead.
