Stores choose to put candies and gum at the cash registers as a marketing tactic. When people are waiting in line to purchase their items, they may see a candy bar they like and decide they want to buy the candy as well. Plus, it is convenient to purchase because the candy is right in front of them. In addition, because many parents bring kids with them to the supermarket, the kids inevitably see the candy and gum at the register and beg their parents for the sweets. As a way to please their children or stop them from complaining, they buy their kids the candy or gum. Therefore, putting candy and gum at cash registers is useful in persuading people to make last minute purchases before checking out.
