"Ti" means "three" or "triple", and "pitika" means basket, so tipitika means "Three Baskets".
The three parts of the tipitika are the vinaya-pitaka(basket of the rules for fully-ordained monks and nuns) sutta-pitaka (basket of sermons, or basket of strings), and abhidhamma-pitaka (basket of further dhamma, or Buddhist psychology).
