The Fugger family of Augsburg was a prominent group of European bankers during the 15th and 16th century. Over several generations, they came to control much of the European economy and had enormous wealth. They replaced the de Mecdicis during the Renaissance. They had mining interests, and traded wool, silk and spices throughout much of Europe.
During the 15th and 16th century, the Fugger family in Germany dominated and almost controlled the economy through their banking business. The history of this family started with Johann Fugger as its founder with his son Hans in the city of Augsburg.
