The Gobi Desert gets so cold due to its relatively high elevation, but no, it isn't extremely high. However, the Gobi is in Mongolia and North China, with high latitudes, and the higher the latitude, generally the colder you get. However, summertime temperatures are usually around of 100, but not hot like the Sahara or Mojave. Regular deserts have temperatures fall about 25 (in the Mojave) to 40 (commonly in Sahara), but sometimes fall about 60 to 70 degrees lower than the high in some remote deserts, but this is uncommon. The Gobi, however, drop about 65-70 degrees lower than its high (about 105) to anywhere to 30-50 degrees!

Mainly because of the heat from the Sun, and finding or carrying enough water to cross the desert. It is also vital to be able to navigate from oasis to oasis, as to get lost is to get yourself into very serious trouble of dying of thirst.
