When it was opened in 1981, it was the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world. This meant that it has only two support columns, one close to each bank of the Humber estuary. The total length of the bridge is over 2,000m and the distance between the support columns is 1,410m.
The Humber bridge was built mainly for the purpose of providing convenience to the commuters as people used to take ferry to cross. There was also a short-lived hovercraft service; Minerva and Mercury linked Hull Pier and Grimsby Docks from February to October 1969, but suffered frequent mechanical failures.
