The Iwo Jima flag picture is important only in that it was faked for publicity.
it was 1968. the did it because they couldn't occupy every island in the pacific and the didn't need iwo jima, so the just returned it.
It was the location that was critical. It was a good place for aircraft to protect the navy and be closer to the Japanese strongholds. Damaged planes could land there and be repaired.
After the Americans took over Iwo Jima, the Japanese had nothing left to them but Retreat. They took all the military force they had and went back to the closest base to Iwo Jima. Though the battle ended officially on March 26th, the Japanese surrendered on the 16th, but resistance remained until the 26th. 1,000 of the survivors were taken prisoner, while the remaining 1,000 or so went to the nearest base.
So that they could not hide among to American population like they are now.
Iwo Jima was so important in WWII because it meant that the U.S. was close enough to Japan to bomb them. It had been critical for the Allied Forces to capture this island because it had two airfields created by the Japanese. The Allied Forces needed these runways to enable pilots to land their damaged planes or planes without enough fuel. It was a good supply point for the Allied Forces too.
So the allies can get closer to japan to stage attacks on them

those locations were important to the Japanese, so when the US took those islands, it was a turning point in the war

Hmm. B-29 was an American bomber; not a Japanese. The US wanted to capture Iwo Jima so they could use the airstrips as a base for their B-29's and bomb Japan. But B-29's were not involved in the Battle of Iwo Jima.
These battles were very important to the U.S victory over Japan. BOth Iwo Jima and Okinawa where islands that held massive naval bases and airbases and severd as massive supply links to other Japanese islands. So when the U.S took them, it cut supply lanes to other unimportant, and important Japanese held islands.

the Japanese were so well dug in tunnels all over the island.
