it was 1968. the did it because they couldn't occupy every island in the pacific and the didn't need iwo jima, so the just returned it.
The battle of Iwo Jima officially ended on March 25,1945.
Allied forces captured the final island nation of Iwo Jima. At the time the atom bomb was dropped to try to end the war ( it did not end the war), there were millions of troops within about 2 weeks from invading Japan. If this had happened, millions of Japanese civilians would have been killed - they would have fought the Allies to the death. Hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers also would have been killed. fortunately, the dropping of the hydrogen bomb on Nagasaki caused the Japanese Army to give up. ( Most of the Japanese Navy had been wanting peace for at least a year, at that point.)

The U.S. struck Japanese forces almost immediately after Pearl Harbor. Japan was bombed for the first time in 42' during the Doolittle raid (named after the general who commenced it). Japanese homeland had American troops in it at Iwo Jima, 1945. This is part of Japanese sacred homeland and can be considered attacking the country of Japan (as in entering it's borders). Now, their could be other islands that were part of Japan that were attacked, but I don't know of any besides Okinawa and Iwo Jima.
Japanese new year is the most special event of the year in Japan.
Anyone can do a Japanese flower arrangement. Give a two-year old some plastic flowers and a plastic vase and you may be surprised at what they come up with.
