There was the Holy Ark which stood in the Holy of Holies in the Temple which contained the tablets given to Moses on Mount Sinai by G-d. Today, the ark in each synagogue houses the Torah scrolls. So, the ark today is important for what is contained inside.
The ark that one finds in every Jewish house of worship is symbolic of the ark of the covenant that the Hebrews fashioned specifically according to the text found in Torah and in which the tablets of the law given to Moses at Mount Sinai were carried throughout their 40 years in the Sinai. It houses the Torah scroll or scrolls that the congregation owns.
The ark of the covenant held aaron's staff and the original ten commandments.
God used to reside between the two gold cherubs on top of the ark.
_______
The ark is where we keep the Torahs.
the holy ark (aron hakodesh, ×רון הקודש) is the place in a synagogue where the Torah scrolls are kept.
Because it contained the two Stone Tablets, on which God Himself had inscribed the Ten Commandments (Exodus 34:1 and 25:21; 1 Kings 8:9).
Why is it important? It really isn't important any more. 2500 or so years ago, when Babylon sacked Jerusalem, the ark went missing. None of the canonical Jewish scriptures record what happened to it. Back then, it was important because it contained the tablets of the 10 commandments, because it contained a piece of manna, and some other "souveniers" of the exodus. More than what it contained, the spirit of God was supposed to hover over the ark.
(The Ethiopian Orthodox Church claims to have the Ark of the Covenant, and of course, anyone who's seen Raiders of the Lost Ark knows that the Ark is currently lost somewhere in a huge US Government warehouse.)
The Ark in a Synagogue is an intricately decorated cabinet used for storing the Torah scrolls - the Jewish holy scripture. It is placed so that it is facing the city of Jerusalem and is one of the most important standard objects in the Synagogue.
The ark is always positioned so that the congregation in the synagogue faces the Temple Mount. In the UK, this means south and slightly east.
ARK
The ark is known as the Aron Kodesh (ארון קודש) and it contains the synagogue's Torah scrolls.
The sanctuary, where prayer services are held is the most important room, and within the sanctuary, the two most important places are the bimah, the raised platform from which the Torah is read, and the ark, the chest where the Torah scrolls are stored when not in use. It's fair to say that the ark is the most important place. Certainly, the ark is the focus of the sanctuary.
We don't know where the ark is and it has never been in a synagogue. It had been in the temple in a room called the Holy of Holies.
