To visit it is an experience and reminder of our history. I am not sure what you mean by tribute, but it is a place that reflects the greatness of Lincoln and the problems he faced as president. It is worth a visit.
When the USA was founded, even some Americans doubted that a large, diverse country with elected leaders could maintain governmental unity for very long. In other words, that a national democracy simply could not work. When secession occured in 1860, it appeared these skeptics were right. If the USA had broken apart in the 1800s, it is doubtful that democratic republics would have become a major force in the 20th Century. Lincoln understood that this experiment in democracy (and remember, in 1860, democracy was very much an experiment) HAD to succeed, and was willing to go to war to preserve it.
Lincoln ALSO understood that slavery was the ultimate cause for disunion, and that simply ending the war without ending slavery was only delaying another war. So he made the latter an absolute condition at war's end.
Lastly, after all the suffering of this war, Lincoln had the courage to ask the question, "Why did this happen?" His conclusion, spoken in his Second Inaugural Address, was startling and humbling for all Americans: this death and destruction was simply the just result of our condoning of slavery.
'if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsman's two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said "the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether." '
For all these reasons, people visit the Lincoln Memorial to honor and remember a man who not only led the USA through the years of its greatest peril, but also asked the vital questions of WHY it came to that.
