Its method of construction is analyzed and written about today and its oculus, that hole in the roof, is a cause of speculation. In its own time, the pantheon was important because it was not only a temple, but also a continuation of the imperial authority, as its history goes back to the time of Augustus.

Unlike other temples, which were dedicated to one or two gods or a trinity, a pantheon was a temple dedicated to all gods. Pantheon is a Greek word which means "of all gods", "of or common to all gods": pan- "all" and theios, "of or for the gods", from theos "god."
