The Zimmerman Telegram, which was a telegram sent by the German ambassador telling Mexico to attack if the U.S. declared war.
After the sinking of the Luisitania, a German named Alfred Zimmerman sent a telegram to Mexico. This telegram asked Mexico to take back the Southern states from the United States. The British intercepted this telegram and were more than willing to pass it on to the Americans(The British and French had been fighting for years at this time and needed reinforcements). Alfred Zimmerman's telegram had been the spark in a powder keg of hostile incidents towards the United States.
Because they read the Zimmerman telegram and they got mad and entered the war and the second one was because the Lusitania got blown up and about 100 citizens died

It was a coded telegram asking Mexico to join Germany's side on World War I and Germany promised that if they join them that they would get their lost and back from the United States. The zimmerman Telegram was the last straw for the United State and on April 6, 1917 the United States declared war on Germany.
