A problem has been detected with the Anti-lock Brake System
It could be a bad fuse ( or a fuse that is not installed all the way )
A sensor or some other problem
* as long as the red " BRAKE " light in your dash is not on , you still have " normal " brakes
It means you have an issue/fault with your ABS
Could be a fuse , a sensor , or some other problem
On a 1998 Ford Escort : It could be equipped with ABS brakes . When you turn the ignition key to the run position , just before starting the engine , see if there is an ABS light that lights up momentarily in the lower left area of your dash ( assuming the bulb is not burned out , or if it is not equipped with ABS brakes )
On a 1998 Ford Escort ZX2 there will be an " ABS " warning light under the engine temperature gauge . When you turn the ignition key to the run position , just before starting the vehicle , the light should come on for a few seconds to prove that the bulb works ( I don't know if ABS was a standard feature on the ZX2 model )
ABS did not come standard on the ZX2, but that was an available option. You can tell if yours has it by turning the key to the ON position but not starting up. If you have ABS, it will light up on the control panel.
abs light is anti lock braking system. if this light stays on it can result in an mot failure.
You need to inspect the ABS units
when you turn the car on, usually the lights on the dash show up "ABS"
You have a problem with the ABS & SRS. Have this looked at by a professional. Neither systems are DIY repairs unless you know exactly what you are doing.
ABS means Anti-lock Braking System. If the light is on and stays on, your ABS system has malfunctioned somehow and is not operating.

If your ABS light stays on you have a problem with the ABS and it is not functioning. Until the problem is fixed the light will remain on.
