because it is a Canadian symdol
A beaver is on the nickel because it is a Canadian symbol, and it was important to the early economy.
that is not clear
On the US 5 cent piece, Thomas Jefferson's home, Monticello is pictured. I think the Canadian 5 cent piece has a beaver on the reverse.
The current brass $1 coin has a picture of a loon, an aquatic bird common in Canada.Older $1 silver coins carry a picture of a voyageur (fur trapper) rowing a canoe. That animal, of course, is a human male.

tridant
Not what, but WHO - a portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd President of the United States, appears on the front of the US nickel. Check out the U.S. Mint website www.usmint.gov for information about other coins.
because its a good Canadian symbol
By convention, the front (known as the obverse) of all Canadian coins have an image of HRH Queen Elizabeth II. The current 5c coin has an image of a beaver on the reverse. This could (mistakenly) be thought of as the 'front' - it's not.
