The Chevy Venture includes an "Onboard Diagnostic System II" data collection system in its computer. When one of the many sensors on the car sends an "error" message, such as a cylinder misfire or an oxygen sensor misread, this information is stored so that a mechanic with an OBD II reader can find the fault. For you, the driver, the OBDII system lights up the "Check Engine" light to show you that something is wrong and you should take the car to a mechanic. Not every problem is a shop job, however: By far the most common reason for the "Check Engine" light to come on is a loose or misplaced fuel cap, which will cause the evaporative emissions system to send an OBDII code to the computer. The light and the stored codes that cause it to come on are not exact diagnostic tools -- they are more like clues that give a mechanic a set of symptoms that he or she can diagnose to arrive at a probable cause of car malfunctions. Owners who are adventurers with a little bit of mechanical knowledge can buy a code-reader (they are brand-specific) that can be plugged in to read (and erase) OBD II codes. Erasing the codes causes the "Check Engine" light to go out, but does not fix any underlying problems.
