There is a problem with the operating system, or with data stored on the hard drive. If the machine is running Windows 98, right click on the icon for the hard drive, and open the 'Tools' menu. Select 'Error checking' and proceed. If the computer is running Windows XP, go to the control panel, select 'Maintenance' and look in the upper left corner for 'System Restore'. Point at that and click, and then select 'Restore system to an earlier time.' You will not lose any data, unless the hard drive is severely messed up. You should already have backed up everything important on the hard drive to a CD-ROM, or some other storage media. If this does not help, you need to have a technician check out the machine. Such a person can determine if the Central Processor Unit or the power supply have gotten so dirty that they are overheating, or if the software is corrupted.
Hardware issues that cause computer shutdowns :

It will probably shut down by itself because of the temperature of the box. If it reaches a certain temperature, it will shut down. Just adding an extra fan will probably cool it down and won't shut down. Or it could be that the computer is getting old - if you have had it for years. This is happening to mine at the moment and were able to sort it out. OR ring a tecnichen to sort it out!

Generally it will be a major error with a program you are running, an incorrect setting in the OS, a virus infection, or overheated CPU that causes the operating system to quit.
Run an antivirus/malware scan to eliminate that possibility.
Find out which program caused the fatal error. ( What were you using when it crashed?)
You can return your computer OS to its default settings.
My computer had a tendency to this. you probably either have a virus or you need to take your computer to someone who can 'clean up' your computer. (get rid of unnecessary programs or the virus if you have one)
I may be wrong but I hope this helps :)
