The convict seemed like he was dangerous in the beginning, but he learns that Pip cares about him, so he becomes a little kinder to people. However, he was a little protective when he first met Herbert; he had armed himself with a pocketknife but disarmed himself once Pip had told him that Herbert is his friend.

The character, Magwitch, is dangerous in Great Expectations because he is an escaped convict who is desperate and willing to do whatever it takes to stay out of prison, even if it means harming others.
