Because he speaks so passionately about compassion, charity and kindness in a non-religious context. Even though he is the spiritual head of a Gelug branch of Tibetan Buddhism, if you ask him he will say that his religion is kindness.

On a personnel note, having been to many multi-day teachings with His Holiness, he is a loving, kind, humble, funny (very funny in fact) man with almost always a smile on his face. He loves to laugh and tell us funny things about himself and his travels. At one teaching he told us how when he was young he use to tickle his teachers so they would laugh so he could run away to play. It really made every in attendance laugh for quite a bit. So he is a very approachable person, not some stiff, formal patriarchal figure. This makes his statements on kindness and compassion resonate ever so much more with people.

I'll offer a couple of possibilities:

1. In Tibetan Buddhism the Dalai Lama is not only the leader of the religion (to use a flawed metaphor... like the Pope) but he is also the political leader of the Tibet... until the Chinese took it over. I guess you could draw the conclusion that he is looked at as both a political leader and the leader of faith.

2. In 1950 China overtook Tibet. Because the Dalai Lama was not only the spiritual but political leader he was exiled from Tibet and still cannot return to Tibet. Hence the "Free Tibet" stickers everywhere. He has maybe received fame from this. Sort of like the Pope would be on the tips of peoples tongues if he was kicked out of the Vatican. Again... because of religious and political differences this is a flawed metaphor.

Hope this helps
