I've read somewhere that - the bird (Humming Bird aka 'Doctor Bird') is an object of superstition. The Arawaks (the first inhabitants of the island of Jamaica) spread the belief that the bird had magical powers. They called it 'God bird', believing it was the reincarnation of dead souls.
This became a folk song which says: 'Doctor Bud a cunny bud, hard bud fe dead'. meaning( It's a clever bird which can't be easily killed). song sung by: Leroy A. White over the phone hope spelling is correct.
The name 'Doctor-bird' is not quite settled. It's been said that the name was given because the erect black crest and tails resemble the top hat and long tail coats doctors used to wear back in the old days. Another theory of thought believe that it refers to the way the birds lance the flowers with their bills to extract nectar. (looking like a doctors syringe)
It is also a very unique bird that in the way it flies.
In every (or most) culture don't they believe that they're clever and invincible and unique. (Just my theory why they might had Nationalized it and besides 'God Bird' what could be better for a country with a strong belief in GOD) Folklore is a big part of history. Asked my husband who is a Jamaican; "cause it's a beautiful bird and it's the only bird that can fly backwards". I'm not arguing!
