The Earth has an atmosphere That burns up most of themeteors that would otherwise hit it, as well as this the crust of the earth is constantly moving and changing the shape of the surface. Add to this erosion caused by rain and wind and only signs of the biggest meteor hits survive the element's

The moon on the other hand has always existed in a vacuum and has been taking direct hits from meteors regardless of size for as long as it has been around with nothing to change the effects they had on its surface.

Which planet has a cratered surface similar to earth's surface?

Mars. However you are wrong in implying that Earth's surface IS cratered, it is not andy impact craters have been modified by Earth's geological processes and are not obviously visible today.

Are mars craters bigger then Earth craters?

yes its like the moons

Why isn't Earth more cratered than the moon?

Erosion will gradually eliminate the craters.Erosion will gradually eliminate the craters.Erosion will gradually eliminate the craters.Erosion will gradually eliminate the craters.

Why is the moon's surface much heavily cratered than earth surface?

The moon has no atmosphere and is geologically inactive. The craters on earth have been eroded by weather, geological events and life

Why isn't the earth cratered like the moon?

Weathering, volcanic action and plate tectonic action means that the surface of the Earth is constantly changing and meteor impact craters are eroded away . The surface of the moon is dead and there are no processes to remove the craters from its surface.

Is Mercury the only planet with craters?

No. All four rocky planets of the inner solar system have craters. Mercury is the most heavily cratered as, unlike the other three rocky planets (Venus, Earth and Mars), Mercury does not have any geologic process to cover, erode, or otherwise destroy craters.

Why isn't the surface of the earth cratered like the moon or like mercury?

It is. But unlike the Moon or Mercury, Earth has an atmosphere, which erodes, and a dynamic crust, (plate tectonics), which renews and alters its surface wiping out most signs of craters.

What are two reasons why earth doesn't look all cratered like the moon when we get hit more often by debris?

Earth has an atmosphere, so we have erosion and weathering that softens the edges of craters and wears them away. The atmosphere also protects us from many of the smaller objects, as they burn up from friction before they reach the surface. Here is a good WikiPedia article on craters we know about on Earth.

Is mercury a tiny cratered planet?

Mercury has a great many craters and is the smallest planet in the solar system, its diameter being about 38 percent of the diameter of Earth but more than double the diameter of the dwarf planet Pluto.

What is the least cratered planet?

Of all the planets, the Gas Giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune) do not have any craters due to the fact that they are, well, made of gas and cannot produce a crater. Of the terrestrial planets (Earth, Mars, Mercury and Venus) Earth has the least "visible" craters due to erosion and tectonic plate movements, whereas Venus has the least craters because it's surface was "reformed" about 500 million years ago.

Why is the moon cratered while the earth isn't?

The Earth in fact is cratered, or was. Billions, even millions of years ago, Earth was often impacted by solar debris, particularly during the early days of the solar system's development. Aside from that, many astronomers believe that billions of years ago, Earth was impacted by a large object about the size of Mars, which sent debris into space. This debris compacted together due to gravity, forming the moon. Over billions or millions of years ago, Earth was pounded constantly by space debris, causing craters. Over time, plate tectonics, weather and changing environments have destroyed, weathered, eroded or hidden the majority of Earth's craters from our view. The reason we can see the craters on the moon is because the moon's environment, weather and plates don't change like Earth's do.

Who has more craters the earth or the moon?

there are more craters on the moon then on earth
