if by longer you mean "taller" in the womb before its born its would be because its spine has not felt the full effects of gravity. The baby giraffe will be taller /longer before its born and trys to stand for that same reason. Once it has been born it will stand and its own weight will compress it as it does any living creature. Thus shorten it.
