Why is the impeachment important?

This is an example of the systems of checks and balances of power that are an important feature of the US President. Although it is difficult to do so, the legislature can remove a President from office and this serves as a check on the power of the president.

The framers of the Constitution felt it was important for the people to have a way to peacefully remove individuals that were abusing their power. Keep in mind, the framers had just fought a long war because there was no way for them to remove their king apart from open revolt and violence.

Despite the views that impeachment was made difficult for various reasons, this was not the case at all. One of the Framers George Mason put it this way, as a paraphrase:

The power of impeachment was a blunt instrument with every expectation that it would be used. They believed that US presidents would most likely be public officials that impeachment would be applied. Mason, speaking for the majority of the framers, said that no person can be above the laws of the nation. Mason and others believed that not only would impeachment be used but its features punished the wrong-doer without blemishing the office ( meaning the presidency).
