Check to make sure that the plug (there normally is a piece of plastic that pushes in the switch to make the chime go off)
Go and push the button in by hand with your keys on if it goes off than this is the problem.
If the chime does not go off after a few seconds than the problem is that the switch mechanism in the chime is malfunctioning and you need to go and pull the chime and either leave it out or replace it.
One probably cause is that the door is slightly ajar. Another is a faulty door switch ... if the contacts aren't closing properly, leaving the circuit open with the door shut securely, the door chime will sound.
The engine light on followed by one chime in a PT Cruiser is a notice to the driver that something is wrong in the engine. The chime sounds only to make sure the driver notices the engine light.

The chime is built into the body computer under the dash on the driver side, behind the fuse box.
The chime is located in the instrument panel on these model Legacys. Remove the cluster outer ring 4 screws. Then remove the instrument cluster by removing another 4 screws and the 5 wire connectors on the back side. On the back side of the cluster is the circuit board and indicator lamps. On the left side, next to the fuel gauge, is two solder points marked BZ+ and BZ-. These are the connections to the chime. Take a screw driver or exacto knife and scratch out the connection to BZ+. The chime is now deactivated. Before you put the cluster back in, take this time to replace any indicator bulbs not working. Reconnect the wiring and re-attach the instrument panel.

Hold down the reset button and then press the mode button to either turn the chime on or off. Indicator lights should go off/on around days of week.
The door chime is located inside the driver's side door. It is part of an instrument cluster that controls the interior lights, locks, and alarm.
You can go under the driver side of the dash, turn the lights on, listen for the chime to locate it. Once located simply unplug the two wire connector.
The driver's side door ajar sensor may not be working.
