'le quartier latin' is a district on the south bank of the river Seine, just across the river from Notre-Dame cathedral. It is called that (this is just a nickname actually, not something official) because it used to be (and still is) the Sorbonne university whereabouts, so there were lots of Latin-speaking scholars in the vicinity.
