The only lion officially endangered is the Asiatic lion, Panthera Leo Persica. The African subspecies, Panthera Leo Leo, is cuurently listed as Threatened, although there has been a reduction in numbers.
The African subspecies is threatened, with a population of around 35000. The Asiatic lion of India is endangered, however, only 369 survive in the Gir Forest Reserve. Human intrusion on their habitat and hunting led to their decline.
