Though it is the national Animal, it comes from the UK Coat of Arms, King Richard the lion-hearts' original heraldic device used two lions but changed the device to include three (actually... they're described as 'leopards'), from there the three stuck although the device itself has been quartered many times since (with the addition of the Fleur de lis) though it was returned to the original quartered device with an updated Fleur de lis by Elizabeth I. The Lion was the Plantagenet symbol from Geoffry V.

the lion is the national animal of England because of many warriors with a reputation of bravery such as Richard the lionhart and the lion is a symbol of courage, nobility, and leadership.
