The dome represents the heavens and infinity, it promotes calm because of the space and it helps with the acoustics.

The main building is a cube shape which represents the material world and it's 4 corners.

There is a tall tower called a minaret from which the "adhan" (the call to prayer) is given.

The carpet in a mosque has a geometric pattern to allow worshippers to stand in rows, all on the same levelhood, this emphasises the "ummah" (unity, eqaulity and brotherhood of Islam)

The "mihrab" is a niche in one wall which indicates the direction of prayer -Mecca "the quibla".

There is a room "wudu" which is ceremonial washing before prayer.

Men and woman pray separatley due to reasons of modesty (bending durin prayer etc) so women often have a special balcony or curtained off area at the back.

There are no icons of Allah as this could be distracting during prayer, but sometimes there will be calligraphic writing of the quran and geometric patterns and symbols ad decoration.
