I'm afraid your research has not gone quite deep enough. The pentagram was (and is) used in many different places by different cultures, with various meanings. Because it is a simple geometric design of 5 overlapping straight lines forming a star, different peoples developed the symbol independently.
By the 5 Wounds, I suspect you mean the 5 Wounds of Christ? While that is a perfectly good use of the symbol, the pentagram dates back much earlier than the 1st century. Just a few of its symbolic meanings include a star (including the Star of Bethlehem); the Goddess, 5 elements of air, earth, fire, water and spirit; a flower; the human form of head, arms and legs; a ram's head.
It is easy to see how the inverted pentagram can represent a ram's head, with the downward point being the bearded chin and other points being ears and horns. Because from very ancient times the ram was associated with the Goddess, well-intentioned Christian missionaries taught that the ram, and specifically the nature god Pan, were images of the Devil. Unfortunately, associating the 5 pointed star with the devil does not work well with the fact that there are fifty 5 pointed stars on the American flag!
