The Colosseum is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Rome because is one of the most breath-taking buildings of antiquity. It is absolutely massive. It was the biggest arena for gladiatorial games in the whole of the Roman Empire.
The Colosseum was elliptic in shape, measured 187.5x159.5 metres (615x523 feet) and could host 50,000 spectators. It height is 48.5 metres (159 feet), but it probably was originally 52 metres high (177 feet). Three tiers have 80 arches. The fourth tier is walled as had 40 windows. The seating was divided into 5 horizontal sectors. The lowest one was reserved for the senators and their families. The other ones were assigned by social status, with poorer people sitting at a higher level. Women sat on steps under a portico, separated from the men. The poor sat on a terrace above the portico. They had the worst view and the worst seats. Their steps were made of wood, while the others were made of marble. Access to the seating was through the arches, 12 of them were reserved for the senators.
The actual arena was 86x54 metres (282x177 feet) and was separated from the seating by a 4 metre high platform. Below the floor there were 12 corridors arranged symmetrically around the two sides. This area hosted the machinery and the animals used for the games. At the two opposite ends there were two monumental entrances for the gladiators and the animals which were too heavy to be hoisted from below the arena. The arena could be flooded for mock naval battles. After a fight the arena was covered with sand to soak up the blood.

∙ 12y agohi my name is borat one hand the colosseum (if you have a good guide or if you are well informed enough) shows the cruelty the Romans were capable of.
on the other hand, there is no thing like "should you visit this or should you visit that." when you travel you visit and experience those sites and contact those being that interest you.
a recent example of the stupidity of "should visit" are the numerous books that bear the titles such as: "500 sights you should see before you die.", "100 buildings you should go to in your life.", " 200 cities you should visit" , etc etc...
you are the only person who should make out what is worthy of your time, money, energy and attention.

It was the largest amphitheatre (which is an open-air auditorium with rising tiers of seats) ever built in the Roman Empire and for almost 2,000 years thereafter. It is considered one of the greatest works of both Roman architecture and Roman engineering. The Colosseum is also important as the site of gladiatorial contests, mock sea battles, executions, and other dramas and spectacles provided by the Imperial government for the populace of Rome in order to keep their attention diverted from serious issues.

In the Roman days it was important because it was an amphitheatre (arena) for the gladiatorial games. The Romans loved gladiatorial combats. It was the biggest arena in the Roman Empire. Its real name was Flavian Amphitheatre and it was named after the emperors of the Flavian dynasty who built it. Colosseum is a nickname. It is thought that it originates from a nerby giant statue of Nero which was named after the Colossus of Rhodes.

∙ 13y agoIf in Rome, one should definitely see the Colosseum as it is, even in its semi-ruined state, a wonder of Roman architecture and engineering. Since they have recently opened up the underground chambers, the visit should be even more informative.
