The Sabbath is a testament to the fact as recorded in the Torah that G-d created the world in 6 days and "rested" on the 7th. Thus, he commanded that the Jewish people keep the sabbath on the 7th day and refrain from doing all creative work on that day. It is considered a day of rest. Sources: Exodus 20:8-11, Leviticus 23:3. God setthis Day Aside for man to come together and spend time with Him. He created it for Man to reflect and gather together and rest with Him

Sabbath is the seventh day of the week, that falls on Saturday, for the Jews it was the day of rest. Christian Sabbath is every day, not Sunday only, Sabbath as a day of rest that was a figure of the perfect rest that a believer finds in the complete, finished work of the Messiah (Christ) Hebrew 4:3 "For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world"

Hebrews 4:9,10 "There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his"

Another answer:

Here are the reasons:

1. According to the gospel, Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week (Sunday): Mark 16:9, Luke 24:1, Matthew 28:1 and John 20:1

2. Jesus appeared to the assembled disciples on a Sunday: John 20:19

3. In Acts chapter 2, the Holy Ghost descends and the apostles begin to preach on a Sunday.

4. Paul commands us to bring our tithes and offerings on Sunday in 1 Cor 16:2

5. Acts 20:7 shows the apostles gathering for preaching and the Lord's Supper on Sunday.

6. Paul commands in Colossians 2:16 "Let no man judge you ... about the sabbath days."

A better question might be "Why do most Christian churches worship on Sunday?" Seventh-day Adventists worship on the only day of worship mentioned as such in The Bible. From the very creation of the world, God set aside one day (the seventh) as a holy day (see Genesis 2:2-3). Because the Israelites had forgotten God's commands through centuries of slavery in Egypt, God had to remind them of his requirements in what we today know as the Ten Commandments. The fourth of those commandments, which deals with the seventh-day Sabbath, even starts with the word "remember," showing that this was something that already existed before the Decalogue was given. Jesus himself kept the seventh day as Sabbath. Isn't he our example? Besides, if he had really wanted his followers to worship on a different day, wouldn't he have stated that explicitly somewhere in Scripture? He even called himself the Lord of the Sabbath. Why would he do that if it were not important?

Because God set aside the 6th day after His creation as a memorial and rest for mankind. He blessed only this day - sunset Friday to sunset Saturday as days began in darkness in Genesis - for then physical Israel and from 17 June 31 AD and the start of the Church, spiritual Israel as well:

Exodus 31:13New King James Version (NKJV)

13 "Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: 'Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you.

The origin of the Shabbat is in the Torah (Genesis ch.2, Leviticus ch.23, Exodus ch.20 and many other passages). Since the Sabbath is a day blessed by God (Genesis ch.2), he gave it to the Israelites as a treasured gift to be cherished (Talmud, Beitzah 15b). It is a day of rest (Exodus ch.20, ch.31), and a day of strengthening ties with the family, the community, and with God.

The Jewish Sabbath is from Friday sundown until Saturday after twilight.
There are two main aspects to Shabbat observance: what we do and what we don't do.
What we don't do: we're not permitted to work on the Shabbat (Exodus ch.20). This includes 39 categories of productive interaction with the world, such as planting, writing, kindling fire, etc. (Talmud, Shabbat 73b). (See: More about Shabbat-observance.)
What we do: candles are lit, customarily by the lady of the household, around 20 minutes before sunset on Friday afternoon. We then attend synagogue for the Friday afternoon prayer (mincha), the kabbalat Shabbat (ushering in of the Shabbat), and the Shabbat evening prayer (maariv), consecutively.
On Shabbat morning, we again attend synagogue. The services are longer than on weekdays and include prayers as well as reading the weekly Torah-portion.

There's often a kiddush (refreshments) afterwards, and congregants then have a chance to schmooze (to talk). Towards the late afternoon, there's another (short) service (Shabbat mincha).

After Friday night services and on Shabbat morning after services, we come home, often with guests, make kiddush (blessing over wine), and have a leisurely multi-course Shabbat meal including singing and words of Torah. Customarily, that week's Torah-reading (parsha) will be a topic of conversation; and the children of the family will be asked to speak of what they've learned in school.

After that, Shabbat is a quiet time: no phones, radio or TV (etc.), just schmoozing, taking walks, visiting friends, reading, learning Torah, playing Board Games, etc.

Husband and wife, in particular, finally have a chance to be together after a hectic week.
