The stars that were formed to make a circle on the original United States of America flag represented the Thirteen Original Colonies, therefore there were thirteen stars. Now that there are fifty states in the U.S. the flag star arrangement has changed to show fifty stars formed to make a rectangle on the top left corner of out flag.

There are stars on the flag for a reason. The reason is that each of the stars on the flag represent a state.
