The stomach is the main area where acids and bile salts break down foods. In the mouth, saliva and mastication (chewing) begins the first step of digestion. The stomach further softens the material before sending it into the small intestines. In the small intestines, fluid is pulled from the body to further soften and break down nutrients. There, nutrients are pulled back into the blood stream for use or storage. In the large intestine, the excess fluid is pulled back out to be sent through the kidneys as waste, and the solid waste continues through the large intestine to the colon and rectum.
