Best Answer

Your stomach acid is made up of enzymes which have the ability to digest flesh. If your stomach didn't continuously produce mucous to line itself, the acid would digest it and all other organs underneath it (assuming your standing upright).

The stomach is protected by the epithelial cells, which produce and secrete a bicarbonate-rich solution that coats the mucosa. This continuous supply of bicarbonate is the main way that your stomach protects itself from autodigestion (the stomach digesting itself) and the overall acidic environment.
