Theoretically, this ensures that no one person or one agency has ultimate power. Unfortunately the system has been so destroyed over the years that many checks and balances are no longer in place.

The constitution was meant to have a balance of strength and flexibility, this is why they need it, so one branch does not have any too much power(said above) so there isn't too much strength in 1 branch and there is flexibility between all the branches.

The system of checks and balances in the U.S. Government works to make sure no one person or group of people can take sole control of the government. Because of this system, no one of the three branches is powerful enough to overturn either of the others.

At the time of the American Revolution against British colonial rule, Americans were very concerned about corruption in government; they did not want to undertake a difficult revolution against the British only to wind up with an equally corrupt, home grown version of the British crown. Since it is always possible for any official to become corrupt, the idea was to install a self correcting mechanism in the government, so that if corruption or incompetence should appear, it can be corrected. Therefore, the government is organized into 3 branches, which are the executive branch (the President and the civil service that he oversees), the legislative branch (the Congress) and the judicial branch (the Supreme Court). Each branch has certain powers that enable it to correct problems in the other two branches. If one branch of government goes astray, the other two can act to correct the problem. If the President turns out to be unfit, Congress can impeach him. If Congress passes bad legislation, the President can veto it, or the Supreme Court can rule it to be unconstitutional. If the Supreme Court does not have the right people on it, the President can nominate and the Congress can ratify new appointments to the Supreme Court.
