It was one of three major cities, along with New Orleans and Shiloh, that led to Union control of the Mississippi river. This was part of Winfield Scott's Anaconda Plan, a strategy to weaken the Confederacy economically and end the Civil War quickly. The other two parts of the Anaconda plan were to blockade the South to prevent arms shipments etc. and to capture the Confederate capital of Richmond.
