At the end of the war, most of Europe were exhausted and financially bancrupt. The US economy had been expanding unaffected by the war at large and with the immense production of military material it was impossible for any other nation to compete. The USSR were the only true contender for the decades to follow but did't have the economy to continue the challange and eventuelly it collapsed leaving the US the only remaining superpower. US military spending is still massive and ensures continued US supremacy.
