These are important things when you are writing because, for example, what if I don't understand what you're trying to say? I'm going to need an example to understand it. (haha, see what I just did there?) Also, supporting a claim with evidence gives the reader more of an idea for why they should believe your claim, as in a persuasive essay.

If you choose a good example, it will explain or support the point. If you choose poor examples, they will just confuse things and go off onto tangents and side-tracks.
