Britain had been fighting a war, on and off, with France since 1798. As most of the resources of Britain were concentrated on removing Napoleon from power and creating a more stable Europe, any distractions elsewhere were not considered of any great importance. Therefore, a minimum of force was used against the invasion of Canada and the after-effects, while most British forces were used in the expulsion of the French from Portugal and Spain, including the Royal Navy which was used to supply British and allied forces around the Iberian Peninsular and Mediterranean coasts. Due to this use of priorities, most history books in Britain concentrate on the major European campaigns, treating the 1812 battles as a backwater campaign.
